- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Poor Ryoma.
- Almighty Janitor: He was one match away from winning a Grand Slam title before suddenly retiring.
Within the series proper, people have yet to challenge his skill (Ryoma even remarked that he loses to him every day).
- Berserk Button: In the anime, the mere mention of Banji can send him into screaming fits.
- Big Damn Heroes: Like Father, Like Son.
- Bumbling Dad: By his personality, it's easy to assume all the discipline in the household comes from his wife and niece.
In the live-action chinese series, Nanjiroh forgot to pick up Ryoma at the airport and mistook his cellphone for the remote controller of the TV.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Nobody believes the old, bum-looking monk used to be one of the best professional tennis players of Japan.
- …But He Sounds Handsome: When Inoue finds him and tries to interview him, Nanjirou tries to play the "I'm not a Nanjiro", until Shiba says that she would have a coffee with Nanjiro, quickly dropping the rouse, and gets offended whenever Shiba insults Nanjiro on purpose.
- Dirty Old Man: Now spends time looking at porn magazines.
- Goal in Life: He wanted to become the best player in the world.
Once his new dream in life became raising Ryoma and teaching him tennis, he retired from the professional circuit.
- Heart Is an Awesome Power: He reveals that the Pinnacle of Perfection (Teni Muhou no Kiwami) lies within every player, and that everyone is already in this state when they first start playing tennis.
The Pinnacle of Perfection starts to fade away as a player starts to get more competitive and becomes too preoccupied with winning or losing, and can only be regained when the player forsakes the outcome of the match and plays simply for the fun of enjoying tennis.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Lovable Sex Maniac: He is constantly flirting with women and looking at gravure idol magazines, but no less funny.
- Love at First Punch: He falls for Rinko, the only girl to reject him.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: His tennis abilities haven't diminished, but he loves acting like a moron until he's got to comment on tennis or play.
- Perma-Stubble: Another thing that leads people to think he’s a perverted bum.
- Retired Badass: He retired once Ryoma was born.
- Trickster Mentor: His usual method to train Ryoma is provoking him.
- World's Best Warrior: Very likely the best tennis player in the series, if not the world.

- A-Cup Angst: She is not amused when Nanjirou mentions her lack of size.
It doesn't help that he's got quite the Hands-On Approach.
- Love at First Punch: She was the first girl who didn't take Nanjirou's crap. Of course, they ended up married.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: The first proof of her growing feelings for Nanjirou is how she switches from a T-Shirt and baggy pants into a cute tennis dress.
He keeps teasing her, though.
- He Who Must Not Be Seen: We barely get to see her face in the modern time stories.
- Slap-Slap-Kiss: She started off bickering a lot with Nanjirou.
- Tsundere: Type B. She's normally sweet and soft-spoken, but used to be rather violent to Nanjirou before they got together, and now she's hinted to be the main breadwinner.
Nanako Meino
Nanako Meino is Ryoma's cousin; she is a student at a local Tokyo college, who currently lives with her relatives, the Echizen family.
She plays the role of an elder sibling figure to Ryoma, who is an only child and helps him and the other Echizens with their daily lives. She is sweet-tempered, very polite, loyal, and devoted.

Satoshi Horio
He constantly brags about his "two years of tennis experience", but he is, in fact, a less than average player. He often explains or tries to explain to his first year friends key words, rules, and techniques. - One Degree of Separation: Turns out that the random cyclist who helps Kintarou reach Tokyo from Mount Fuji is his older cousin Junpei.
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Rather than “skill”, him having the same height as Ryoma saved the team to avoid disqualification when Ryoma is late to a tournament, only needing to get him a white cap and a team jersey.
It helped the first time when Ryoma sleeps through before a tournament, and it helps again when he goes missing before the Finals against Rikkaidai.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Proclaims his experience proudly, despite being very average himself.
Kachirou Kato
Kachirou Kato hangs around a lot with Horio Satoshi and Mizuno Katsuo.
Although he is not very good at tennis, he thoroughly supports the team. He has a father who coaches at an expensive tennis club. Though he is normally polite and meek, Kachirou believes strongly in justice and fights to the end to defend his beliefs. Katsuo Mizuno
Katsuo Mizuno is the third of the "Freshman Three". He is a kind and soft-spoken person, but lacks confidence. Often when he does something good he would just consider it to be good luck or a coincidence.
He respects his senior club members a lot and would never lose hope in them. Therefore when something is amiss within the club Katsuo would often get very worried, despite the fact that it does not concern him.

- Paper-Thin Disguise: Hilariously averted. When Oishi is late for the match against Hyotei, the team tries to disguise him as Oishi by putting a swimming cap on his head and painting his bangs with a black marker.
It doesn't work and only makes the others laugh at the result.
