He became emir on 08 February following the death of Alhaji Muhammadu Aminu, the 17th Emir of Zazzau.[1][2] He was born in Zaria, Nigeria.

Idris started his education being tutored by two Islamic scholars in Zaria and then continued with formal studies at the Zaria Elementary School. He was at the elementary school from till , during this period, the young Idris lost his father when he was 12 years old. He then attended Katsina Training College to become a teacher. The monarch started his teaching career in at Hunkuyi, now the headquarters of Kudan local government area of Kaduna state.
